Iron eggs! OK, I've done a bit of Googling and it looks to me like they're basically hardboiled eggs (usually quail eggs, sometimes chicken's eggs) that are then peeled and simmered repeatedly in a braising liquid similar to 鹵水 (lǔ shǔi). I found a picture on Flickr of the packaged version — they look ace. Were the ones you had chicken eggs or quail eggs?

I actually have some 鹵水 in the freezer at the moment (from Sunflower's recipe), so next time I see quail eggs I will pick some up and give it a go! Or I might try it with this braising liquid that I found on a forum thread about 鐵蛋.
