While I vote for colder I note it *could* mean either, depending on whether the fridge has a control to turn up the *power* or turn up the *temperature*. Ours has a knob that gets colder as you rotate it clockwise, which is the usual "up" direction.

Ours is just marked with plain numbers (up to 5, I think). I did wonder if some of the confusion was due to thinking that the numbers on the dial were degrees Centigrade, but apparently it wasn't.
